Find the train family before measuring
Rail policies can vary by operator, service brand and route. TGV INOUI standard luggage uses per-item dimensions and a compulsory name and mobile label. SNCF’s page for certain France–Germany partnership tickets instead gives a larger per-item outline and requires travelers to carry all luggage themselves. JR West’s covered Shinkansen lines use a three-side total threshold for oversized items. These are different systems.
Write down train brand, route, ticket issuer and any connection. For the complete trip, identify every service that could impose a separate rule. Do not treat “Japanese Shinkansen” or “European train” as a single policy. Measure the loaded bag, including wheels and protrusions, and retain which dimensions correspond to each axis.
| Service example | Recorded size form | Other condition |
|---|---|---|
| TGV INOUI standard | 70 × 90 × 50 cm each | Labels required; carry all at once |
| SNCF range on DB/SNCF ICE partnership | 130 × 90 × 50 cm each | Ticket range limits scope |
| JR West covered Shinkansen | Three-side sum over 160 cm | Reserve oversized-space seat up to 250 cm |
Calculate the right measurement
For a three-side sum, add the three outside dimensions: a 30 × 50 × 85 cm bag totals 165 cm. Under JR West’s stated scheme, that exceeds the 160 cm reservation threshold, so the traveler should reserve the designated seat if the item is within the published maximum. This arithmetic is a screening result, not a storage-fit test.
For TGV INOUI’s side caps, compare each outside side against each published maximum in an allowed orientation. The source examples do not mean the bag can exceed one side by “using up” space from another. If the bag is soft, measure it packed and full; a flat empty bag can have a different outline.
- Add sides only when the policy uses a sum.
- Keep individual side caps separate from totals.
- Record the bag’s packed shape and any handle or wheels.
Reserve storage as part of the ticket plan
JR West states that bags over 160 cm total and up to 250 cm require a seat with oversized-baggage space on covered lines. The source says there is no extra reservation fee, but it also describes a fee for bringing the item without a reservation. Check seat availability before buying or changing the ticket.
A storage space is not automatically available because the train permits the item. SNCF also says passengers must carry all their luggage in one go and label each piece. Before departure, confirm where the reserved space sits, whether your exact item fits it, and whether a transfer offers enough time to move it.
Label and stage the bag for boarding
Attach the required tag before reaching the platform and keep the personal details requested by the operator legible. Remove prior labels. Put documents and items needed during the ride in a smaller accessible bag where the rules permit. Place luggage only in the designated area so aisles and doors remain clear.
Recheck the operator page near travel and inspect any service notice. Policies can be updated; the sources reviewed here state page update dates for SNCF and no stated update date for JR West. Store a screenshot of the route-specific rule with the reservation so you can distinguish a general allowance from a booked storage entitlement.
