Name the bag category before comparing sizes

A small personal item usually has an under-seat purpose, while an additional cabin bag may use overhead storage. The airline defines the categories and entitlement. A product sold as a sling, tote or carry-on does not determine which allowance it receives.

For every flight, identify the operating carrier, fare, cabin and route. Keep an under-seat size separate from an overhead size and check whether the latter is included or purchased.

Check combined weight and per-bag weight separately

ANA records one carry-on plus one personal item within a combined 10 kg allowance for the scoped ordinary rule. Jetstar Starter also combines its main and small item, with a different total. A combined total should not be stored as if each bag could independently reach that number.

In our records, the selected Lufthansa Economy Basic short/medium allowance includes a personal item. Selected British Airways own-carrier Economy Basic has a separate handbag and cabin bag. The phrase Basic alone cannot determine what two carriers include.

Measure the packed outside shape

Measure at the widest points with the intended load and include external parts where the official policy requires them. Catalogue dimensions may describe an empty or nominal product. A soft bag can bulge beyond those dimensions.

Under-seat fit also depends on the assigned seating area and staff instructions. A dimensional screen is evidence about size, not a promise that your bag will stay under the seat for every stage of every flight.

Make a flight-by-flight check

For a connection, retain a result for each operated flight rather than assuming the most generous policy applies everywhere.

  • Included or paid overhead item and its dimensions.
  • Combined and per-bag weight, where established.
