Identify the item and its travel state
Operators often define a special category with both an item list and a packing condition. SNCF TGV INOUI lists a folded pushchair, folded scooter, musical instrument in a labelled case, skis in a labelled cover, snowboard, and folding wheelchair among examples. It publishes a special-item envelope of 90 × 130 × 50 cm alongside the ordinary suitcase allowance.
Measure the item in the exact state required for travel: stroller folded, scooter folded, instrument inside its case, skis in a cover. Do not measure a bicycle while folded if it is being carried assembled. Note any item-specific condition that differs from the generic special-item limit.
| Item | Source condition to verify | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Pushchair | Must be folded; store in baggage area | Folded outside size |
| Scooter | Folded; further limits begin 13 Dec 2026 | Folded outside size and wheel/seat conditions |
| Musical instrument | In a labelled case | Case outside dimensions |
| Bike | Separate unassembled/folded-bike combinations | Bike and any cycle bag separately |
Keep the ordinary bag allowance in the calculation
A special item may replace one ordinary suitcase allowance rather than add an unlimited extra piece. SNCF describes a combination of one standard bag, one special item and one hand-luggage item for special luggage. For bicycles, the page gives separate combinations for assembled and folded or dismantled bicycles. Use the row for your item instead of adding the special-item maximum to every ordinary allowance.
A luggage label is compulsory on TGV INOUI. Put the label where it stays visible when the item is folded or covered. The operator says passengers must carry all luggage themselves in one go, so check the whole combination and whether you can move it from platform to storage area without assistance.
Check route and effective-date details
The SNCF page says some scooter categories become prohibited from 13 December 2026, including seated or non-folding scooters and those with more than two wheels or tyres wider than six centimetres. That announced future date is distinct from the current rule. Check the travel date and latest page before packing.
A special-item allowance on a TGV INOUI service should not be transferred to a different railway or route. SNCF’s Europe page directs travelers to TGV Lyria for full special baggage details and limits France–Germany partnership conditions to qualifying SNCF Voyageurs range tickets. Verify the operator and ticket issuer at each segment.
Plan storage at the destination too
A special-item policy only answers carriage on that service. It does not establish elevator access, locker fit, or how far the item must be carried at the destination. Check station access and the event or accommodation rules separately. If the item needs a dedicated space reservation, arrange it before buying a non-changeable ticket.
Measure the packed item, save a photo of the label and source, and keep any reservation confirmation. If your object is larger than the published special-item envelope or its category is unclear, contact the operator with exact dimensions and a photograph before travel. Do not assume staff can carry or store an item outside the stated policy.
